How to use wine

I've not been able to answer a few of my questions anywhere:
1) What is the difference between crossover office and Wine?
2) How can I get Wine to run the programs already installed on my windows partition? (this would be sooooo helpful.)
3) Does Wine work with Photoshop? (Yes, Gimp IS good, but it doesnt suit me yet. Hopefully that will change)

Thank you Sudheer, you are running a truely great website here.

Wine and CrossOver,

Hi there,

1. Difference between Crossover and Wine
I am quoting directly from Wikipedia

CrossOver (known before version 6.0 as CrossOver Office) is the collective name for three commercial and proprietary programs developed by CodeWeavers that allows many Windows-based applications to run on Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris using a compatibility layer. The programs include CrossOver Mac, CrossOver Linux and CrossOver Games.

The programs are tweaked, proprietary versions of the public Wine source tree with various compatibility patches added, more user-friendly configuration tools and commercial support.

Wine is a software application which aims to allow Unix-like computer operating systems on the x86 architecture to execute programs written for Microsoft Windows. Wine also provides a software library known as Winelib against which developers can compile Windows applications to help port them to Unix-like systems.

In other words, CrossOver is proprietary and wine is free software. I strongly recommend wine over CrossOver. Follow the links to read more about them.

2. Wine is not designed to interact with an existing Windows installation. You have to install them in Wine just like you did in Windows. Applications usually have a setup or installer program.

The above is a quote from http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ

3. http://appdb.winehq.org/ is the Wine Application Database (AppDB). There you can get information on application compatibility with Wine. I noticed Photoshop CS2 in the AppDB Top 10 Platinum list.

Sudheer
