Ubuntu Linux As My Desktop Operating System
I started using Linux on my servers few years ago. I had a strong notion that Linux was not suited for desktop computers. Later, I realized that Linux is even more friendlier than the (proprietary) operating system I was using before. In my humble opinion, Ubuntu is one of the best Linux distributions available today. Ubuntu has plenty of packaged application software and drivers which are very essential. Out of the box, all these software packages work great. You can start using these instantly after installing Ubuntu. You don't need to modify settings, edit configuration files or tweak the system to use it.
Ubuntu is distributed in two editions - Desktop and Server. Ubuntu supports its users with free security updates for at least 18 months. Ubuntu is built on Debian distribution.
Both Desktop and Server editions have their own advantages.
Server edition comes with very secure configuration files using which we can start deploying various services like Apache, Squid, Mysql, Samba and DHCP quickly and easily. LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP) packages can be installed with just one selection at the time of installation. Ubuntu has one of the best package management tools. The graphical version of the package management tool is known as Synaptic which is very handy. It takes care of all the install, uninstall and dependency resolving issues.
Desktop Edition comes with many popularly used desktop applications like Office Suite, music and video players. Support for wide variety of branded and assembled computer hardware makes it free of configuration and tweaking hassles.

ubuntu: common man? os
i entirely agree with bhargi? comments.i have used mandriva;suse;ubuntu &fedora.out of the 4 I liked ubuntu most & next is fedora.ubuntu does not require great expertise in linux.the person who is switching from windows to linux will like ubuntu more handy than fedora as does not require too much of tweeking; a straight forward like windows execpt for media players(common problem for all linux distros).even installing media players later is also easy as everything is there in medibuntu repository.skype, wine & googleearth all these works well with ubuntu compared to fedora.even installation is easy.all the softwares works well and easy to understand.
But I have got a soft corner towards fedora as it is first limux distros which I started using since about 6 years back & I have installed it in my desktop along with windows XP.Whenever I am bored & I want to learn something about linux I will start it, as it will have one or the other problem.just 1 week back UDEV was not starting And i have to search some user help forums to search for the help. Then I came to know what is Udev & how it works etc, etc.Later I cleaned my system.then it started working.
probably over the period somewhere fedora team has moved away from the reality of providing a easy, hassle free, commonman friendly distro.they have to shake up & wake up to the reality, before ubuntu becomes the real & the only one competitor to windows
Is Ubuntu Stable
Is ubuntu stable as compare to Fedora?? I m currently using fedora. I want to use Ubuntu also. may be I should try it
All the distros are stable
All distros have stable and development releases
Ubunutu Desktop edition is tweaked for ease of use. Hence most of the applications works out of the box.
While you set your repository options make sure you do not enable Pre-released updates and Unsupported updates.
Stable releases
All distributions have stable and development releases. The releases distributed through CD, DVD media and the project websites are stable.
Is there any specific reason for you to change distribution? If you simply want to try another, go ahead and do it now.
With warm regards,
Sudheer
Ubuntu Funny Names
What I like most about Ubuntu is the funny names they use for their releases.
