Opening CHM Files

How to open CHM files on Linux (Fedora Core 6)?

This post is a sequel to the previous one. Just like I was unable to extract RAR files, I was unable to open CHM files on my Fedora box.

The Problem:
I had to downloaded a file from the Internet which was published in no other format but CHM. I wanted the information from that file, therefore I downloaded it to my desktop. I thought some program would open the file on my Fedora box and clicked the file from Nautilus as anyone usually would to open files. Unfortunately, Fedora said it could not open the file.

The Resolution:
I took the same approach which I took to solve the previous problem with not being able to extract RAR files. Here's what I did

  1. Click Applications, then click Add/Remove Software
  2. Click the Search tab in Package Manager
  3. Type CHM in search bar and click Search
  4. From the search results click gnochm-0.9.9-2.fc6 to place a check mark in it
  5. Click Apply
  6. Click Continue on the Package Selection Pop-up Window

Those are the steps I did and I was all set. I went back to Nautilus and clicked the CHM file and the GnoCHM CHM Viewer 0.9.9 successfully opened the file.

By the way, Microsoft Compiled HTML Help is a proprietary format. I wish I the file creator chose other formats like ODT or PDF rather CHM.

Thanks a lot!!

Really a cool tip. As I have KDE as main GUI in my distro, some additional packages had to be downloaded and installed. Also, I had to create manually the entry in KDE Menu. It works very well.

Thank you!!
Dione.

Command line lovers use this

yum install gnochm -y
and launch it by navigating to Applications>Accessories>CHM Viewer. You can also use it by double clicking on the chm file in File Browser.

Thanks for the cool tip,
